Αυτός ήταν ο κόσμος που μόλις είχε σβήσει και ο καθένας μας έβαζε τη σφραγίδα του, ανάλογα με την ιδιοσυγκρασία του στον νέο κόσμο που ανέτειλε. Ήμαστε οι πρωτοπόροι και το χαιρόμασταν. Το χαιρόμασταν σε κάθε μας κίνηση, σε κάθε μας έκφραση. Πειραματιζόμασταν με καινούργιες εμπειρίες και δοκιμάζαμε καινούργια πράγματα. Στις 26 Οκτωβρίου 1852 ξέσπασε στην Αθήνα μια φοβερή καταιγίδα, η οποία έπληξε και το ναό του Ολυμπίου Διός. Ο Βίλχελμ Λάγκους, σε επιστολή στη μητέρα του, περιγράφει πολύ παραστατικά την καταστροφή του μνημείου: "Επέλεξα το δρόμο που περνάει από τα ερείπια του ναού του Διός. Οι φήμες ήταν αληθινές. Η φοβερή καταιγίδα δεν είχε καταστρέψει μόνο σύγχρονα κτήρια. Είχε ρημάξει και ένα από τα ομορφότερα μνημεία [...] των Αθηνών. Ένας από τους τεράστιους κίονες που ανήκει σε έναν από τους μεγαλύτερους ναούς των θεών των Ελλήνων, το ναό του Ολυμπίου Διός, έχει σκύψει το περήφαν...

Στην παρούσα μελέτη, ο καθηγητής Αλέξανδρος Παπαγεωργίου-Βενετάς, ο οποίος έχει ασχοληθεί για χρόνια με την ίδρυση της νέας πόλης των Αθηνών και έχει ερευνήσει το υπάρχον αρχειακό υλικό τόσο στην Αθήνα όσο και στο Μόναχο, παρουσιάζει, αναλύει και σχολιάζει τις διάφορες πολεοδομικές προτάσεις για την Αθήνα. Ανέκδοτα στοιχεία και σχέδια δημοσιεύονται στη μονογραφία αυτή, που αποτελεί ουσιαστική συνεισφορά στην ιστορία της ευρωπαϊκής πολεοδομίας.
