The mountainous territory known in antiquity as the Cibyratis was among the last regions of southwest Asia Minor to be explored by western scholars and travelers in the 18th and 19th centuries. Boubon, the smallest of four cities known to have formed the Cibyratic city league, was identified as late as 1842, subsequent to its three neighbors and partners in that league.
