Οι απαρχές της ιστορίας της Αθήνας χάνονται στα βάθη της προϊστορίας. Ήδη από την μυκηναϊκή εποχή η κορυφή του λόφου της Ακρόπολης πήρε φρουριακή μορφή και έγινε η έδρα του ανώτατου άρχοντα.
