Το "Χρονικόν" του Γεωργίου (Λογοθέτου) Ακροπολίτη (1214-1282) αποτελεί την κύρια βυζαντινή πηγή της πρώτης Αλώσεως της Κωνσταντινούπολης, από τους Σταυροφόρους το 1204. Ο Ακροπολίτης, διπλωμάτης, και στρατιωτικός, που υπηρέτησε την Αυτοκρατορία της Νίκαιας επί αυτοκράτορα Μανουήλ Η' Παλαιολόγου, βίωσε τα γεγονότα. Η αφήγηση του Ακροπολίτη ξεκινά με την φυγή του Αλεξίου Αγγέλου από την Κωνσταντινούπολη και τη συνάντησή του με τους Σταυροφόρους (1202) και τελειώνει με την επανάκτηση της Πόλης από τους Βυζαντινούς στις 12 Οκτωβρίου 1261. The "Ανάπτυξις" is a text not only needed but also deserved a critical edition. To produce such an edition has been my main concern in this book, but I have also tried to bring some order and some accurace in what pertains to Nicholas' life and works. Chapter one of the introduction is a narrative of his life and of the events of his times which are echoed in his writings. Codex Baroccianus graecus 131, a thirteen century miscellany, contains among other things a rare sample of philosophical teaching material (fols. 397v-446r) which can be dated in its compilation stage to the eleventh and twelfth centuries A.
