Ioannis Makriyannis, Vital Expression

Ιoannis Makriyannis constitutes a "great teacher of our language" according to the poet George Seferis, and has since remained a powerful national myth. His "Memoirs" charmed the aesthetics and the political concerns of a whole generation. Apart from this, we owe him a series of 24 paintings that "narrate" episodes from the Greek War of Independence of 1821. Τhose aquarelles, which were painted by Panayiotis and Dimitrios Zografou from Sparta, belonged to king Otto, were bought by Joannes Gennadius in Rome (1909) and describe vividly several episodes from the "Memoirs"....

The textbook Greek art and archaeology, written by Greek specialist Dimitris Plantzos and published by Kapon Editions in 2011, was selected by Atlanta-based American publishers Lockwood Press as their first venture into the field of classical archaeology. Translated by British archaeologist Nicola Wardle, the book, which has just appeared, was thoroughly revised and expanded by its author. The English-language edition is distributed in Greece and the rest of Europe by Kapon Editions, who also redesigned the Greek-language edition. In the five years since its first edition,...

This beautifully illustrated book offers an overview of the greatest archaeological sites and discoveries from ancient Greece. George Petrides, Interiors

Games and Sanctuaries in Ancient Greece

In Ancient Greece, athletic events were held not solely for the sake of the contest itself but, rather, within the context of religious festivals in or near sanctuaries in honour of the gods. The athletes competed first for the gods and then for their native city and themselves. It was believed that the victors in the games did not distinguish themselves through their superior ability alone, but because they enjoyed divine favour. [...] "Games and sanctuaries in Ancient Greece" celebrates the athletes, the games, the sanctuaries, the cities and, above all, the inspiring s...

Games and Sanctuaries in Ancient Greece

The Olympic ideal found resonance, not just in its cradle, the sacred land of Olympia where it was born and nurtured, but also in three other Pan-Hellenic sanctuaries, as well as in major local festivals, from the brilliant Panathenaia to the athletic contests in cities and sanctuaries in distant regions of the Eastern and Western world. With the book "Games and Sanctuaries in Ancient Greece" by Panos Valavanis, which we first published in 2004, when Greece sought and successfully held the Olympic Games in Athens, we sought to present a richly illustrated work of scholar...

Ancient Cypriot Art in the National Archaelogical Museum of Athens

This is the first time that 237 representative object pf the Cypriote collection in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens have been presented both to the scholarly world and to the general public. Very few people were previously aware of the existence of the collection, so this is an event of more than just scientific value in making the collection known to a wide audience.
