Ο Πέλοψ, γιος του βασιλιά της Λυδίας Ταντάλου, ήρθε στην Πίσα της Ήλιδας και με τα γρήγορα άλογά του κέρδισε την Ιπποδάμεια, κόρη του τοπικού βασιλιά Οινόμαου. Ο Πέλοπας κυριάρχησε σε όλη την περιοχή και έδωσε σε ολόκληρη την κάτω του Ισθμού χώρα, το όνομά του: Πελοπόννησος.
