H2O: The Colours of Water
Water, quite simply, is life. Without a stable supply of water, we cannot enjoy a healthy and prosperous life. But as we look around us today, water resources are increasingly threatened by the consequences of human activities. The quality of water in certain areas of the world is deteriorating substantially, and severe shortages are widespread. Climate change will exacerbate the world's water problems, so urgent action is needed. The European Union is fιrmly committed to preventing pollution, and to protecting and restoring ecosystems. Action is essential, as damaged ecosystems mean higher healthcare costs. They can also have a negative impact on economic growth, and even compromise peace and security. That is why the Commission is committed to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable water management, so that future generations may enjoy a high quality of life, in Europe and throughout the world. Looking after water resources is a responsibility shared by all. Communication and education are vital tools to drive home the message that water is a precious resource. Citizens around the world need to understand the role water plays in their daily lives, and how it affects their lifestyle and livelihood. Images are often far more useful than words. The powerful images contained in this book can help us see the true value of a clean and plentiful supply of water. And when we see such fragile beauty, we understand the need to protect it -drop by precious drop. (from the foreword, Stavros Dimas, European Commissioner for the Environment)
