[...] The examples included in this volume are essentially divided into two categories: the simple doors which, constructed with functionality in mind, display minimal decoration on the door leaves; and complex doors, where special care was taken over the surrounds, which often lend the whole a monumental character. Most of the decorative motifs used are taken from the familiar carved motifs of antiquity (rosettes, palmettes, etc.) which are often joined by Western Baroque elements and decorative motifs of an intensely orientalising nature in regions which witnessed the meeting of different cultures (Crete, Rhodes, etc.) [...]
