On Site: Dutch Archaeologists in Greece
Archaeologists from the Netherlands have been working in Greece since the early decades of the nineteenth century. Scholars such as Carl Vollgraff, Ferdinand de Waele, and Cornells Bakhuizen devoted their careers to the discovery and study of the material remains of ancient Greece. Nowadays, Dutch archaeologists still actively carry out fieldwork in various parts of Greece. These investigations are conducted under the auspices of the Netherlands Institute in Athens that coordinates all academic exchanges between Greece and the Netherlands. In this book, several archaeological projects are described in detail, in many cases by the archaeologists conducting the research. They show that Dutch archaeologists have contributed significantly to our knowledge of ancient Greece. The cooperation between Dutch and other foreign scholars with Greek archaeologists shows the truly universal spirit of Greek culture.
